There comes a moment in the life of a church when it becomes defeated or desperate enough to change. If your congregation is healthy, you need an annual check up to assess strengths and weaknesses. However, statistics reveal that 70-90 percent of churches are in decline or have plateaued.
This book is for the pastor or church leader that realizes their congregation needs to shift direction. It doesn’t mean the church isn’t functioning. It is just not functioning the way it should. The church is hurting.
Many times churches will approach change by gravitating to the latest trend or trendsetter. This book suggests that you ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus’ will for His church. Then you can align any needed changes with transformation. When God transforms our hearts, it comes by the Holy Spirit resetting our desires, passions, and purpose.
There is no silver bullet to get a church on track. What it takes is a long look in the mirror, a broken heart before God, and a willingness to work hard. Whether a church needs major revitalization or minor renovations, the repairs come from prayer, planning, and perspiration. So roll up your shirtsleeves, gather in prayer, and seek God’s heart. Become the Desperate Church.
The Desperate Church Asking God For A Fresh Start Through Prayer And Planning edition by Keith Manuel Religion Spirituality eBooks
The Desperate Church would make an excellent small group or Wednesday study for a congregation, as well as for a group of pastors, and of course for an individual. There are thought and discussion provoking study questions at the end of each chapter, followed my a soul searing prayer. It opens with the need of a person or people in a church to be absolutely desperate for God to be evident in their life or lives. Without a sense of desperation, nothing will change.
This well written book -- it flows smoothly at every moment -- shoots straight. Author Keith Manuel doesn't soft peddle his words. It is as if he is saying, "If you are serious, here is what you can do. If you are not serious, don't even bother because God won't be in your efforts." Or, to say it another way, " God works when you do things His way."
While the author includes some illustrations and good ideas, mainly he provides and explains principles -- of leadership, of pastoral care, of church discipline, and of course of evangelism.
Reading The Desperate Church showed me how desperate I am for a revival in my relationship with God and with my church. The people in my church need to read it so we are all on the same page as we encourage each other to be more Christlike as we live out our faith in our daily lives.
The Desperate Church is one of those books you are going to want to buy 20 or 30 copies of, so you have plenty to share.

The Desperate Church Asking God For A Fresh Start Through Prayer And Planning edition by Keith Manuel Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I found Manuel's book to be practical! So often I read a book and finish with no practical ideas or suggestions. This book is readable, understandable guidance for church leaders in the areas of worship, evangelism, leadership, fellowship... How refreshing that his guidance begins with desperation for God! It's obvious that he is writing from personal experience as well as his study.
A challenging book that is a must read for all pastors and church leaders. Manuel pushes leaders to see the need for change and adaption in order that they may continue to be effective in reaching their surrounding communities with he Gospel message. I highly recommend this book as a church staff read and discussion. Even if you may feel that your church is not hurting, this book will still help you evaluate and plan for the future.
Manuel's book pushes the envelope in church leadership. From the start there is a great desire to get back to God and the basics. This book is challenging, not just to the layman or the staff, but to the pastor as well. There is a call for God's leaders to do whatever it takes, within the realm of scripture, to reach across the pew in love and reach out in the community for the sake of others. I highly recommend this book to pastors, staff, laymen, and anyone willing to be awakened to the power of God in their life, church, and community! Great opportunity for a pastor and staff related study!
This is a practical book written for church leaders (both staff and lay leadership). It is packed with great information to help assess a church and to strengthen its ministry. A rock solid book based on Biblical principles, it will challenge you to think about the ministries of the church you serve and what they need to accomplish their purposes.
I have read many books that deal with the issues in many churches today, but none hit them head on like this book none of them. I recommend this one book that is a must read for all church leaders, Pastor, deacons etc... YOU'VE GOT TO GET THIS BOOK!!!
Pastor, Mark Payton
Keith has written a thought provoking book that is supremely Biblical and intensely practical. Church members will be encouraged to seek revival and renewal in the church; church leaders will be equipped and inspired to seek God's favor in bringing about revitalization in their churches. As a seminar professor, I plan to use The Desperate Church in my classes. Get this book, read it, and put the principles expounded in it to practice and see what God will do in revitalizing His church! Jake Roudkovski, Ph.D.
The current situation in Southern Baptist Churches is alarming. Dr. Keith Manual has worked with church helping them revitalize their ministries. He has basically led them to address immediate current needs and access their ministries for long term growth. Dr. Manual has written a marvelous book for the pastor or layman who wishes to help their church go from decline to growth. Using the acronym "BUILD" as the foundation for his work, Dr. Manual challenges the reader to examine certain characteristics of church revitalization.
Even though Dr. Manual states that the book is not a "how to book on church revitalization," he does in fact, write with the purpose of renewal in mind. Manual address the organization structure, the role of leadership within the process, and finally the attitude of the church i.e. is the church humble enough to address their situation.
This is a must read for the pastor, layman and congregation. In my opinion, this work would make a great Wednesday Night Study or a special committee study.
